Open space was first defined as an important urban design element in 1991 by Chinese architect and urban designer Jianguo Wang in his pivotal manuscript Modern Urban Design Theory and Method. This publication made a name for Wang as one of the first architectural scholars to introduce Western urban design theories to China after 1978.
