Heavy bowgun monster hunter world

I want to like the Heavy Bowgun because it's cool but every time I use it I get my ass handed to me. I'm using two shield so that I can block and I'm trying to dodge but the bowgun dodge seems pretty weak. I have a Steel Bowgun because i didn't want to invest too much time in it yet as I've been maining lance. I'm not looking for the "meta." I just want some pointers to get started with the dakka.
