Quartz tip is a must as it adds damage and I use an blaze rod for reach. I also added a leather grip and that's all. It's been serving me well.

There is very little benefit to using silent gear, especially on a pickaxe. You can get max speed on an ATM pickaxe w/ enchants and apotheosis, easily enough. Going through any extra hassle isn't worth it, imo. You can get ATM in less than half an hour from starting, if you really wanted to.
